Red, Red Wine.... Goes To My Head....

This photo is listing strangely to the right, a fine example of art imitating life.
This is a recommendation: in Auchan yesterday there were two wines on promotion (buy a case, get one free). Knowing very little about wine I chose the one with the pretty label in French. Yes, pathetic, isn't it? And the one I chose was not this one....no I chose the Cotes de Rhone of which we now have 12 bottles and, just because.... I picked up a bottle of the other one and I know you can guess the rest:
the Cotes de Rhone, and I'm being kind here, is mediocre while this one above is brilliant, that famous wine tasting adjective meaning "slips down easily."
So, if you live near Auchan check it out and do not be put off by the English label or the garish cock on the bottle.

Maybe you need to develop a taste for coq au vin or boeuf bourguignon , Angela, if you haven't done so already. You can then gradually use up the Côtes du Rhône for cooking purposes that way. Who knows, it might take so many meals or dinner parties that your last six bottles or so will - through ageing and maturing - become superbe !

I often choose wines by their labels, and sometimes the shape of the bottle. I buy Cote du Rhone wines because they are usually a light red. I've come to love the wines around Provence, especially Cote d'Aix and some made near la Tour d'Aigues. I still love rose wines as well, especially in the summer.

I think we've all made that mistake from time to time (unless you're a sommelier!) L & I call a mediocre wine, our second bottle wine.

Cheers & much peace, JP

Hi Angela,
Thanks for stopping by. So, I am not too certain about your label theory...some of the best have terrible labels. When we're in Provence, we mostly quaff Leclerc's best rose - who needs to spend more than a few Euros down south?

Since I use the exact same Auchan and was thinking of buying some non Bordeaux red that is a most welcome hint.

BTW the same Auchan had some ridiculously cheap Muscadet last week (€1.50 a bottle I think) which has turned out to be remarkably drinkable. If its still there I'll buy it again on Tuesday.

In defense of Côtes de Rhone, there are some very good ones out there, maybe just not the one with pretty labels :)
We had a bad Bandol rouge au resto saturday night, yuck, but I know there must be good ones out there, too.
